CES 2007 KARENNET PARTY REVIEWS

As the creator of the “Official KarenNet Party List” http://www.thomas-pr.com/01/cespartylist.html which has tracked technology press events for over 15 years, I’ve attended hundreds of parties at shows like COMDEX, Macworld, Linux World, CTIA, E3, CES and many other trade shows, with fond memories and the knowledge of what makes a successful event.

This year’s CES 2007 parties and press events were lower key than previous years, featuring second or third-tier entertainment (like Monster Cable’s guest performer - Al Jarreau??) and obvious cost-cutting measures (such as Dell’s beer, wine, soda bar - no open bar), but in spite of all this, CES is still one of the only shows where you can find a large assortment of great parties to hit every night.

CES 2007 Night Before Show - Sun., Jan. 7, 2007:
The HP party at Caesar’s white-themed PURE Nightclub (the same hotspot that hosts new BFF’s Britney Spears and Paris Hilton), was packed with mostly HP suits on the first party night of the CES show in Las Vegas.  The spiced chicken skewered food was a disappointment (not  the quality you’d expect at Caesar’s), but the low-key style that HP discreetly demoed new products, like their recently acquired red and green “Envy” computers, impressed the few editors that I talked to at the bar.
Rating – B-
KarenNet says:   “Too many HP staff and not enough press.”

CES 2007 Day One – Mon., Jan. 8, 2007:
Showstoppers was the highlight event of the heaviest party day of CES (the first day), with over 18 parties and press conferences.  Showstoppers was well-attended with a couple of hundred press.  The journalists liked the assortment of food, ranging from shrimp and sushi, to cheeseburger sliders, steak and fajitas, and a delicious Bolognese pasta station.  Thomas PR client Jadoo Power http://www.thomas-pr.com/pressreleases/jadooshowstoppers2007release.html was a co-sponsor of Showstoppers and had a very successful event, being filmed by Fox TV, NY 1-TV, NBC-TV and interviewed on various radio shows.  Thomas PR also placed Jadoo Power’s XRT hydrogen fuel cell on the NBC Today show on Monday, Jan. 8th, so the buzz at Showstoppers was Jadoo’s appearance on the show.  Press I ran into at Showstoppers included John Kelly and John Lentz from Best Stuff Magazine, Dr. Natalie Petouhoff from NBC-TV, and “The Muscleman of Technology,” Bruce Pechman from KUSI-TV San Diego, etc.
Rating – B+
KarenNet says:   “Great food and high-quality press networking.”

CES 2007 Day Two – Tues., Jan. 9, 2007:
I expected Dell’s Party to be a ritzy event, since it was held at the beautiful Venetian Hotel in Madame Tussaud’s Museum.  What a disappointment!  There were only 5 or so press in attendance and the food was a limp mélange of ham and cheese roll-ups and a veggie/fruit plate without an open bar!  I thought I was at a frat party!  The party got better when we went in the back to see the spectacular wax figures.  Check out the great CES photos with the wax-figures at http://www.thomas-pr.com/19/index19.html.
Rating – C+
KarenNet says:   “Bad food and small turn-out, but wax figures added style.”

Since Palms Hotel’s opening a few years ago, I’ve attended a couple of Maximum PC parties at the trendy Ghost Bar and knew it would be a cool locale with excellent networking opps within the gaming and computer industry, with a great vibe and libations.  As expected, the cool factor was there as we ran into gamers, like Killer Networks with their signature big evil “K” necklaces, as well as the Maximum PC and Mac Addict press, including Will Smith from Maximum PC.  The mysterious dark white and blue décor, martinis, pumping music, and 55th floor Las Vegas panoramic skyline views added to the party’s success.
Rating – A
KarenNet says:  “Great club ambience, DJ, food, relaxed networking.”

CES 2007 PR PLANNING:
GETTING THE MOST PUBLICITY FROM YOUR PRESS KITS AT TRADE SHOWS –

With the trade show season coming upon us, with massive trade shows, like the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January, CTIA Wireless Orlando in March and PMA Vegas in March, how do you get beyond the noise? Your press kit is your first weapon to get the press to notice your news.

You spend a lot of time preparing your press kit in the hopes that a writer will be impressed and cover your new product introductions at a trade show in a news piece/review or feature story, thus earning invaluable free publicity – Bottom line: more sales.

So you think you have a winning press kit. It’s expensive, painstakingly prepared, and beautiful: glossy, tied up with a fancy clasp and chock full of well-written press releases, slides, business cards and 5-color brochures. You follow trade show procedure and ship your press kits to the press room where they are displayed with hundreds or thousands of other companies’ kits.

This whole press kit process is time-consuming and expensive. But, despite all your effort, you don’t even get one product mention in any magazine.

What went wrong?

Issues:

Writers are the busiest, hardest working people around. They have to churn out volumes of copy in very short periods of time – especially during trade shows where they work the show during the day and write at night.

There’s a lot of your competition trying to get their eyeballs at the same time as you.

Since writers are so busy and inundated with information, you’ve got to make it easy for the press! The press kit mentioned above has a few mistakes causing it to be easily ignored by writers. In an effort to be fancy, it was tied with a clasp and therefore too hard (slow) for writers to skim through quickly in the press room.

Example: If you visit a press room anytime, you will observe writers going up and down the stacks of press kits scanning them by quickly opening and closing them. This is their time-efficient method of ascertaining whether there is any actual news in the kits before picking them up, since kits are extremely heavy to carry. I’ve actually met many writers with back and hernia problems because of the press kit loads they carry around at trade shows. So therefore, you’ve got to make your kit fast and easy to read as well as news-worthy to assure coverage.

Here are some useful press kit PR tips to assure your kit will be noticed:

Make sure your press kit is easy to open and close: no clasps, closures, or other obstacles.

Put the most news-worthy releases on top. Don’t hide your news under brochures, old releases, company appointments or other useless information.

Make your booth number easy to find on the press release or in the front of the kit. That way writers will quickly find your booth, increasing the possibility of an interview or demo.

If you follow these easy steps, you will break through trade show press kit noise, get better results, and make it easy for writers to remember your company.
