OWC HOLDINGS LAUNCHES SoftRAID UPDATE V. 5.6.3 --
NOW COMPATIBLE WITH macOS 10.13 HIGH SIERRA

SoftRAID Software Keeps Precious Files Protected Against Disk Failure
For Everyone who Needs to Safely Store & Quickly Access Large Amounts of Data

For Photographers, Videographers, Editors, Web Designers, Database/Media Managers, Advertisers, Archivers, & More

Mill Valley, CA September 26, 2017 -- OWC Holdings, Inc., a division of OWC, a leading zero emissions Mac and PC technology company, announced today the launch of SoftRAID v. 5.6.3, an update and bug fix release, which makes SoftRAID compatible with macOS 10.13 High Sierra. SoftRAID http://www.softraid.com keeps precious files protected against disk failure -- ideal for everyone who needs to safely store and quickly access large amounts of data, including photographers, videographers, editors, audio producers, web designers, database and media managers, advertisers, archivers, and more. SoftRAID 5.6.3 features a highly optimized driver, which provides a software RAID solution that equals and can often exceed the performance and reliability of dedicated hardware RAID controllers. In addition, SoftRAID provides advanced disk testing, logging, disk health monitoring, and a unique disk failure prediction system for advanced warning of potential disk problems to protect users from catastrophic data loss.

Easy Setup Automatically Guides Less Technical Users through Setup

SoftRAID guides less technical users through the process of creating SoftRAID volumes, automating the process of configuring disks and making recommendations to help users setup their SoftRAID system. All users have to do is decide what the RAID volume will be used for and how much space to use (with hints from the application) -- SoftRAID Easy Setup does the rest.

Key Changes/Bug Fixes in SoftRAID v. 5.6.3

Now compatible with macOS High Sierra.

o       SoftRAID 5.6.3’s certify, verify, and monitoring features work with APFS formatted disks (Note: SoftRAID 5.6.3 does not support creating, modifying or converting APFS volumes).

o       Driver modifications ensure that disks do not hang as a result of changes in macOS High Sierra’s kernel features.

o       Driver now uses fewer threads -- no more than 1 thread per disk for disk update operations, since macOS High Sierra limits the number of threads which can run at one time.

o       Driver has been changed to handle disk errors better.

Fixes driver loading to ensure that the correct driver is installed the first time and that newly updated drivers are always loaded. In previous versions, it was possible for older cached versions of the driver to be loaded by mistake under certain circumstances.

Driver no longer reports read errors on stripe (RAID 0) volumes as write errors.

The command line interface of the SoftRAID Tool no longer returns an error every time the disk unmount command is used.  In previous versions, this command used to unmount all volumes, which use a given disk and would return an error even if it was successful.

Also includes numerous bug fixes, details of which can be found in the release notes at: https://www.softraid.com/release-notes

“At SoftRAID, we don’t believe that software should be shipped and then forgotten. We are constantly refining and improving our product, because we love what we do and want it to be the best it can possibly be!” said Tim Standing, VP of software Engineering, OWC Holdings Inc.

SoftRAID Key Features:

Supports all versions of Mac OS X from 10.6.8 through macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Disk Error Reporting: SoftRAID monitors and logs all disk errors often ignored by macOS.

Email Notifications: available with full version of SoftRAID only.

Predictive Failure Analysis: provides advanced warning of imminent disk failure on all disks which support SMART, most USB 3, 3.1 and USB-C disks (enclosures) and also many USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and 800 disks.

Certify Disk: guarantees disks reliably read and write data (destructive, ideal for new disks).

Verify Disk: ensures entire disk can be read (non-destructive test for any-time use).

Validate Volume: confirms that entire volume is readable and all parity data is correct.

Supports all Intel based Macs with Core Duo 2 processors or later.

       Supports Thunderbolt 1, 2 & 3, eSATA, SAS, FireWire and USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 and USB-C.

Converts AppleRAID stripe (RAID 0) and mirror (RAID 1) volumes to SoftRAID.

       Supports RAID 0, 1, 4, 5 and 1+0 (and non-RAID volumes) - (RAID 4, 5 and 1+0 volumes not available with SoftRAID Lite).

Supports TRIM for SSDs on all SoftRAID RAID levels.

All SoftRAID volumes can be startup volumes.

Supports volumes up to 4 petabytes (4,000 TB).

Supports up to 16 disks per volume and up to 32 volumes per Mac.

Automatic rebuilding of out-of-sync RAID volumes.

Fast rebuilds for accelerated rebuild times.

I/O and error counters for every SoftRAID disk and volume.

Extended disk information including: hours of use, reallocated sector counts and media wear for SSDs.

Disk labeling and LED blinking to aid in disk identification.

       Extensive logging of SoftRAID events.

Command line interface with dedicated man page (not available with SoftRAID Lite).

Built-in recovery tools for recovering severely damaged partition maps.

SoftRAID supports mac OS from 10.6.8 to 10.13 High Sierra

SoftRAID version 5.6.3 is compatible with all versions of Mac OS X from 10.6.8 through the latest release of macOS 10.13 High Sierra. SoftRAID works hard to ensure that their software is ready for every new mac OS release.

Larry O’Connor, Founder & CEO, OWC
BIO 8/17
Bio:

Interviews:
http://www.nabshowbuzz.com/owc-other-world-computing-larry-oconnor/
https://www.macobserver.com/podcasts/background-mode-larry-oconnor/

Larry O’Connor is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Illinois-based Other World Computing (OWC®). OWC is a leading provider of quality computer upgrade products and services for Mac and PC users around the world.

Larry O’Connor started Other World Computing (http://www.owcdigital.com) while still in high school in 1988. Frustrated with the high cost and options for Apple memory expansion, he came to a better solution and started providing memory upgrades online. Today, OWC is one of the most respected suppliers of Apple product upgrades and accessories. The company has demonstrated dynamic growth in each of its 29 years of operation. Over the years, O’Connor has received numerous offers to partner or buyout, but he has instead opted to work toward his vision of building OWC into a self-sustainable organization that has become known as a great place to work, innovating and supporting professional grade solutions and service to technology users around the globe.

O’Connor has provided the leadership and vision to establish OWC as the leading provider of technology products and services that it is today. OWC’s products include storage, accessories, memory, and more for Apple and PC computers and peripherals. Products are sold under the OWC brand, and distributed through Macsales.com at http://www.macsales.com, as well as numerous other resellers and distributors. OWC is currently ranked the number one technology employer in the Woodstock, Illinois area, and in total employing more than 200 people today.

OWC “Green” Building

OWC’s commitment to the environment matches its commitment to customer service and product quality. Its 37,000 square-foot corporate headquarters opened in March 2008, and is the culmination of that environmental commitment. O’Connor’s “Green” building design employs the principals of energy efficiency, protection of natural resources, and lowered pollution emissions. In 2008, OWC was named one of the Top 12 Green-IT Companies by Computerworld Magazine for the innovative, environmentally responsible design of OWC’s corporate headquarters. The OWC corporate campus was awarded LEED® Platinum Certification in March 2010 by the Green Building Certification Institute. Platinum is the highest achievable level of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Program, which began in 1998. With this recognition, OWC also became the first privately owned facility in Illinois incorporating light manufacturing/assembly to obtain LEED Platinum status in the world.

100% On-Site Wind Turbine Powered & Recycling Programs

Other Green initiatives include the installation of a Vestas V39-500kW wind turbine in October 2009, making OWC the first technology manufacturer/distributor in the U.S. to be 100% on-site wind powered. The 194-foot tall turbine generates approximately 815,000kW of electricity per year. Over a year’s time, the turbine’s average excess power generation is approximately 10 percent more than what the building consumes, with the remaining energy being pushed out to the local grid.  Not content with harnessing wind power, OWC has also adopted solar power as an energy source in Woodstock as well as their Austin, TX office. In early 2014, an array of 160 solar panels was energized at the Austin facility, producing approximately 60,000kW/year, or about one-third of the power consumed by that three-story building. The array in Woodstock is made up of 770 solar panels, making it one of the largest privately-held solar arrays in Illinois, and generating approximately 265,000kW/year. OWC’s utilization of GeoThermal for heating/cooling systems is a key component reducing the actual demand on energy in the Woodstock facility at large. O’Connor believes that environmental stewardship is the right thing to do for future generations and makes good economic sense as well, that with planning and effort, sustainability is synonymous with success.

OWC continues to lead the way with ongoing recycling programs as well. The OWC headquarters has a strong corporate focus on recycling of all day-to-day operational materials, and currently 94 percent of solid waste materials are recycled in some manner, for a near zero waste program. OWC subsidiary, NewerTech http://www.newertech.com, provides the NewerTech® laptop battery recycling program, the first of its kind, and is currently the only fully prepaid battery recycling program.

Continuous Development of Innovative Tech Products

Technology innovation never stands still, and over the years O’Connor has led OWC and its subsidiaries to add thousands of consumer electronics and computer hardware products to its inventory. Products debuted under O’Connor’s direction have won award recognition from the international press, including Macworld, MacLife, iPod Observer, MacUser, Creative Mac News, Layers and Photoshop User.

OWC Product Lines include:

  • Envoy Pro EX award-winning portable USB and Thunderbolt drives

  • Mercury Elite Pro Dual Mini portable RAID powerhouse

SoftRAID Logo

SoftRAID Customer Phil Legg
President, FutureProof Records

SOFTRAID USER STORY:
3˝ YEARS AFTER INITIAL SETUP, SOFTRAID 4 SAVES CRUCIAL DATA
AT FUTUREPROOF RECORDS

Background:

Futureproof Records, a UK music distribution company, needed a system to store and protect a large amount of crucially important files and applications. So, in January 2014, they installed OWC’s SoftRAID RAID 4 software on a Mac Pro 5.1 running Mac OS 10.8.5 Mountain Lion. FutureProof had essential applications running on their Mac Pro, which required them to keep the older Mountain Lion Mac OS instead of upgrading to the latest OS. Their original configuration with the initial install of SoftRAID 4 has been running continuously since setup.

Two or three times after January 2014, Futureproof’s Mac Pro crashed. After each crash, SoftRAID 4 alerted them that due to the crash, their mirror volume was out of sync. Then SoftRAID successfully rebuilt the mirror volume to restore their data. The Mac OS was never updated and neither was the version of SoftRAID.

How SoftRAID Predicted Disk Failure Before Any Evidence Appeared:

SoftRAID - Disk Predicted to Fail Based on SMART Data

SoftRAID Screen

Fast forward to July 9, 2017:  three and a half years after initial setup, SoftRAID 4 popped up a dialog box, saying: Disk predicted to fail” even though the system appeared to be running fine. Futureproof President Phil Legg was concerned. He was advised by SoftRAID’s online help to generate a technical support file and send it to SoftRAID tech support. When he launched SoftRAID to create the file, he discovered that one of the disks had a Failure Predicted” alert -- a much more critical issue.  Disk sectors were being reallocated at an alarming rate. Legg immediately emailed SoftRAID for a solution.

No matter how old the version, we stand by our software and its ability to protect the user against the disaster of disk failure”

SoftRAID Team

Futureproof was using an older, unsupported version of SoftRAID v. 4.5.4 (the current version is 5.6.1).  There are not many companies who would rush to help someone using older unsupported versions of their software, but SoftRAID stands by its software and its customers. Mark James at SoftRAID technical support got back to Legg right away, telling him that his disk urgently needed replacing. James explained that when a disk starts reallocating sectors that quickly, the disk is in a death spiral and may not last even a few days. Futureproof ordered new disks on the spot.

James also noted that the RAID 0 mirror disks Futureproof were using for their SoftRAID volume had over 30,000 hours of use each and were at the end of their expected life. In addition, the system’s older Hitachi boot disk had over 50,000 hours of use — well past the expected lifetime of that drive. The disks have now been replaced and the Mac Pro is still in service and still running Mountain Lion. Futureproof has upgraded its version of SoftRAID to 5.6.1—the latest version—to take advantage of the even greater protection and extra features it offers, such as displaying reallocation sector counts directly in the disk tile.

“It was very reassuring when the SoftRAID warning popped up letting us know of an imminent problem before it happened. I’d advise all small companies to consider SoftRAID for their data-storage needs. Many thanks!” said Phil Legg, President, FutureProof Records.

SoftRAID Believes in Happy Endings:

A story with a happy ending and a satisfied customer is due to the SoftRAID team’s belief that no matter how old the version of SoftRAID, they stand by their software and its ability to protect the user against the disaster of disk failure. SoftRAID also believes in providing amazing technical support with virtually round-the-clock service to ensure that their customers get the help they need and keep their data safe. About SoftRAID & OWC Holdings, Inc.:

Based in Mill Valley, California, SoftRAID was founded in 1996 by a team of Mac software engineers to provide high quality storage solutions for Mac OS. The company’s founders have worked with disk drives on Mac OS since the Mac Plus shipped in 1986. Available for Mac OS X since 2003, SoftRAID has earned its reputation as a rock solid product with great technical support -- the first to market with many key features,  including fast mirror rebuilds, full email notifications, bootable RAID volumes, disk certification, RAID volume validation, TRIM support on all RAID Levels, disk failure prediction, and more. In 2014, SoftRAID was acquired by OWC, the leading manufacturer and upgrade provider for Apple and PC enthusiasts, and renamed OWC Holdings, Inc. SoftRAID is included with all preconfigured OWC ThunderBay RAID enclosures and will power the upcoming OWC Mercury Viper SSD that offers read speeds of 4.6 GB/s and write speeds of 4.0 GB/s. Mesa, AZ, August 2, 2017 -- Dr. Greg J. Marchand http://gregmarchandmd.com/, an award-winning board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist dedicated to reducing invasive surgeries, recently became the first U.S. surgeon to earn a prestigious accreditation for his outstanding record of performing and promoting minimally invasive procedures. The World Record Academy awarded Dr. Greg J. Marchand and his surgical team the world’s record for removing the largest cancerous tumor -- a 17-centimeter (6.69-inch) cancerous ovarian tumor about the size of a junior sized soccer ball -- using an incision smaller than a dime.

Dr. Marchand’s In-Bag Morcellation Technique for Minimally Invasive Surgery for Cancerous Tumors

Dr. Marchand and his team completed the procedure using “In-Bag” Morcellation, a technique developed by Dr. Marchand in which the tumor is bagged and broken down so the particles can be extracted one by one laparoscopically. Otherwise, patients would need a sizeable incision to surgically remove such a large mass, requiring additional recovery time, pain, risk, and a delay in chemotherapy or other medications. Dr. Marchand, a board-certified OB-GYN specializing in minimally invasive surgery, worked closely with a gynecologic oncologist in completing this amazing surgery. While removing cysts and tumors using laparoscopic surgery is a standard practice, it is rare to use the technique in conjunction with an ovarian cancer staging procedure.

Marchand placed an Endocatch bag (Endo Catch™ II 15 mm Specimen Pouch) around the tumor through incisions made through the belly button, then brought the lip of the bag to the incision. He then broke apart the mass inside the bag and took the pieces out. Marchand said the most difficult part of the surgery was removing the cancerous mass without spilling any cancer cells into the abdomen. If cancerous material spilled back into the abdomen, the cancer could have spread and worsened the patient’s prognosis. The World Record Academy verified that this type of technique had never been accomplished previously on any malignant tumor this large.

Advancements in Cancer Surgery are Just as Important as Newest Cancer-Fighting Drugs

Dr. Marchand, who was diagnosed in 2010 with mixed-cell carcinoma (an aggressive cancer of the testes), said it is particularly gratifying that his technique can help cancer patients. He received surgery and treatments in 2010 and has been in remission ever since. “I know what it’s like to face a diagnosis of cancer,” Marchand said. “In my opinion, advancements in the surgical treatment of cancer are just as important as the newest cancer-fighting drugs and chemotherapy agents. If we can use minimally invasive surgery to take some of the recovery time and complications out of cancer surgery, then I think we’ve really done a lot of good for patients fighting cancer.”

This is Dr. Marchand’s second world record in laparoscopic surgery. In 2008, Dr. Marchand was awarded a Guinness World Record for the removal of the largest uterus laparoscopically. In this case, it was not a cancerous mass, but a seven-pound benign (non-cancerous) uterus that was removed. In addition to the two world records, Dr. Marchand is extensively published in laparoscopic surgery publications and was recently recognized as the first U.S. surgeon to receive SOEMIS recognition (Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery) from The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopist’s (AAGL.org) and the Surgical Review Corporation http://www.surgicalreview.org.

Date of Surgery: 04/21/2015
Date of Award of World Record Academy World Record: 1/27/2017
Actual Title of Record: “Successful Laparoscopic Ovarian Cancer staging Surgery on the Largest Malignant Ovarian Tumor”

Description of Technical Procedure Performed: Successful Complete Laparoscopic Ovarian Cancer Staging Procedure with Hysterectomy, Bilateral Salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy and dissection of pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection, and removal of 17cm large right-sided ovarian tumor. The tumor was found to be adenocarcinoma on frozen section and “Well-differentiated Adenocarcinoma with pushing invasion” on final pathology. The technique of mass removal was a modified “in-bag” morcellation invented by Dr. Marchand which included exteriorization of the mouth of the bag prior to “in-bag” morcellation. Morcellation used only blunt instruments and did not involve stretching the incision beyond the 14mm required to facilitate the laparoscopic retrieval bag.  No trochar was used. Abdominal and Pelvic washings were collected prior to the removal of the mass and ultimately proved negative.

Method of Verification of Tumor Size:  Pathology specimen reconstructed, verification by board certified pathologist.

FAQ:

Why did it take so long for the World Record to be awarded?

To verify this record, we had to research all the other related surgeries that had been published to determine if ours was truly the largest malignant tumor ever surgically staged through completely laparoscopic means. After our research determined it was, we employed the World Record Academy who underwent their own verification process. Following the completion of these two independent verifications, we can now confidently say that this is likely the largest malignant ovarian tumor to ever undergo completely laparoscopic surgical staging.

What is “In-Bag” morcellation, how is it different from just breaking something apart, or regular morcellation?

In-Bag morcellation refers to the surgical technique of placing an object inside a bag, usually plastic, before breaking it into pieces. Usually the object is broken into small pieces so that it can be removed through small holes, thus not needing to make a large incision to remove the object. This high level of caution is reserved for objects that could contain cancerous cells. In the case of suspicion of cancerous cells, it is important not to spill the material back into the patient’s body cavities because cancer cells can “Seed” or begin new cancer colonies if they are moved around the body. In this case, we removed a 17-centimeter cancerous tumor through a hole that was approximately 1.4cm large. This technique is one of the more extreme examples of “In-Bag” morcellation.

What did Dr. Marchand invent? Did he invent laparoscopy or the Ovarian Cancer Staging Procedure?

Dr. Marchand has pioneered techniques for “In-Bag” morcellation and particularly the technique used in this case to remove the large 17cm tumor. The technique used here involved stretching a 1.10cm incision in the umbilicus to facilitate a bag that was made to fit a 1.5cm port. Thus, the actual size of the hole after stretching around the bag was approximately 1.4cm. This invented technique also included the painstaking process of removing the mass through the port without breaking the bag. This included the use of special blunt instrumentation to remove the tumor without breaking the bag (and spilling the tumor). Dr. Marchand did not invent laparoscopy or the Ovarian Cancer Staging procedure, but he did invent the technique of removing the large cancerous tumor, which was then added to a Laparoscopic Ovarian Cancer staging procedure.

Is Dr. Marchand a gynecologic oncologist?

No. Dr. Marchand is a generalist OBGYN with special training in minimally invasive surgery. A board certified gynecologic oncologist was present for this surgery as part of the surgical team.  Dr. Marchand routinely includes consultation with the gynecologic oncology service as part of his care of any patients suspected to have a malignancy.  Dr. Marchand would never attempt to perform an ovarian cancer staging surgery without the assistance of a gynecologic oncologist, and is very appreciative for the patient care that has been given his colleagues.  Dr. Marchand has referred many patients and continues to refer to his esteemed colleagues practicing gynecologic oncology.

What do the letters after Dr. Marchand’s name mean?

The letters represent honors bestowed upon Dr. Marchand by different certifying organizations. They include:

MD -- Medical Doctor

FACOG -- Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology -- Certified by The American College/Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (acog.org)

FACS -- Fellow of the American College of Surgeons -- Certified by the American College of Surgeons (facs.org)

FICS -- Fellow if the International College of Surgeons -- Certified by The International College of Surgeons (fics.org)

SOEMIS -- Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery -- Certified by the Surgical Review Corporation (surgicalreview.org) and The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (aagl.org)

Why is this record recognized by the World Record Academy and not Guinness?

Dr. Marchand has previously received a World Record from Guinness for other surgical accomplishments. Unfortunately, Guinness politely declined to recognize this achievement and said it was too specific to create a record for. We discussed the importance of recognizing cutting-edge surgical excellence in the field of cancer surgery with The World Record Academy, and they agreed to recognize the category after extensively researching the accomplishment.

What is a “Cancer Staging Surgery?”

A cancer staging surgery is a removal of the pelvic organs to treat and determine how far a cancer has spread. In this case the cancer is an ovarian cancer we are discussing. The surgery includes removal of both ovaries, the uterus, the omentum (a fatty organ in the abdomen) as well as the removal of lymph nodes and other biopsies. It is a complex surgery that is usually performed through a large incision. Although the surgery has been performed by laparoscopic techniques in the past, we believe this is the largest tumor to ever be staged using a completely laparoscopic technique.

What is so special about this record? Hasn’t cancer staging surgery been performed on larger ovarian tumors?

Yes, staging procedures have been completed on larger tumors, but we believe that this is the largest tumor to ever be staged through entirely laparoscopic techniques, meaning without cutting the patient open.  The unique part of this procedure was the removal of the extremely large mass without spilling any of the contents in the abdomen. This was performed with special instruments using a large bag. The technique involved exteriorizing the mouth of the bag and then removing the large mass bit by bit, using a technique pioneered by Dr. Marchand. There is no question that larger tumors have been staged by open-incision procedures, and that larger non-malignant tumors have been removed laparoscopically without the need for a cancer staging procedure.

How can you be sure that this is the largest tumor to ever receive laparoscopic cancer staging? What steps did you take to verify?

It is very difficult to research every single cancer staging procedure ever performed. However, we performed extensive searches of all available literature and publications regarding laparoscopic ovarian cancer staging surgery prior to presenting our claim to The World Record Academy. The World Record Academy then went on to verify the claim independently.

How would the average ovarian cancer patient benefit if all staging procedures could be performed though minimally invasive means?

If all ovarian cancer staging procedures could be performed using laparoscopic means, patients could enjoy much faster recovery from surgery, with a much quicker return to a high quality of life. This would mean that patients could begin any necessary chemotherapy or radiation treatments sooner, and be healthier when they undergo these treatments. The overall goal would be a lower mortality and higher quality of life for patients facing a malignant diagnosis.

What gave you the idea to invent this technique?

“Well, I have done hundreds and hundreds of laparoscopic cases where I removed benign ovarian tumors, and as a responsible surgeon I had to come up with a technique to remove these large masses while keeping all of morcellated pieces contained.  This was especially after all of the negative attention that morcellation has received following the 2014 FDA ‘Black Box Warning.’ As a minimally invasive surgeon, I knew that simply cutting the patient open was not the best I could do for my patients. After studying some other in-bag morcellation techniques, I developed this technique which has the versatility to be used on even extremely large masses.”

What gave you the idea to qualify for a world record?

“The idea first came to me after talking to some of my friends and colleagues about the huge tumor that we performed the laparoscopic cancer staging on. Upon hearing about the 17cm tumor we removed with in-bag morcellation, I was really humbled to hear many of them say that they had never heard of a minimally invasive cancer staging surgery on that large of a mass. One of my colleagues actually said, “That has to be some kind of record.”  It kind of stuck in my head, so after I talked about it with my office staff, some very smart and motivated people at my office actually DID check to see if it was a world record, and published it. I'm very grateful to my amazing clinical staff, and I really do hope this helps bring attention to promoting minimally invasive surgery.”

What does this technique mean for Ovarian Cancer patients with large tumors?

“The In-Bag morcellation technique itself is great for large tumors whether they are malignant or benign, and allows you to remove extremely large tumors through a small hole, actually smaller than a dime.  The other option, which is cutting the patient open, has more postoperative pain, more complications and blood loss, and a lot longer recovery. So all patients who receive minimally invasive surgery will benefit. When you combine this technique with a laparoscopic cancer staging procedure, that’s when you see a real amazing improvement. You take a large, invasive procedure that has always been performed through a large painful incision, and you change it into a ‘keyhole’ surgery that a patient could even have on an outpatient basis. That’s a big difference.  Interestingly, just recently the National Cancer Institute of Milan in Italy just released their study on the differences between laparoscopic ovarian cancer staging and the traditional open procedure. After reviewing more than 3,000 cases, they found that the laparoscopic procedures were just as good in treating the cancer, and had less blood loss, fewer complications, and a quicker recovery. Most importantly, they showed that patients who also needed chemotherapy for their cancer were able to begin their chemotherapy significantly sooner after laparoscopic staging than those who had traditional open procedures. This means less time for the cancer to spread, and a quicker return for that patient back to what they really want, their normal lives back.”

What does this mean to you as a cancer survivor?

“I underwent surgery and treatments after I was diagnosed with Mixed Cell Testicular Cancer in 2010. I am very lucky that the surgery for my stage of Testicular cancer was a very minimally invasive procedure, and that I had a good surgeon. I remember the horrible fear of ‘just not knowing what was going to happen,’ and I think that fear is really worse than any of the pain of the cancer or the treatments. When I woke up from the surgery, I really felt great, and over the next few days I had a very quick recovery. I was able to get back into my life quickly, and although I was still afraid of what was to come, I felt like I had the strength to fight. When I think about my patients with Ovarian cancer, I would like them to be able to come out of surgery feeling like they have the strength to fight, to take on the cancer.  I can imagine that when you are recovering from a one of these big, open traditional staging procedures, you’re in excruciating pain, you really can’t move, and you feel like you’ve just been hit by a bus. I’m sure you don’t feel strong and ready to fight the cancer at that point. You might just feel like giving up. If my technique can help even a few patients avoid that feeling, then that’s the most valuable thing in the world to me. That’s why I’m really passionate about what this new cutting edge technique can do for cancer patients, and I feel it can be just as valuable in the fight against cancer as the latest ‘big pharma’ wonder drug.”

Successful Complete Laparoscopic Staging of Ovarian Cancer in a Patient with a 17cm Malignant Ovarian Tumor

Gregory J. Marchand MD, FACOG, FACS, SOEMIS, FICS

Rachel L. Pile MS1

BACKGROUND:

As minimally invasive surgery becomes more and more prevalent in the US, practitioners continue to push the boundaries of what procedures can be performed through minimally invasive means.  In this unique case, a 17cm mass was removed without spillage, and after removal of the mass the gynecologic oncologist was able to present and together the two surgeons were able to complete the omentectomy, lymph node dissection and complete the staging procedure completely laparoscopically.  This is the largest known malignant tumor to undergo successful laparoscopic stagin.

ABSTRACT

A 47-year-old Caucasian female presented with pelvic pain and suspected ovarian torsion. Patient was taken to the OR for severe acute pain, and was known to have a 17cm right sided ovarian mass.  On laparoscopy, the mass was found to be perfused with no evidence of torsion.  Frozen section after removal of the mass was found to be consistent with an adenocarcinoma. This entire tumor was able to be removed laparoscopically with the aid of blunt instruments and an in-bag morcellation technique, avoiding any spillage of the contents of the bag. The remainder of the staging procedure was able to be completed laparoscopically in conjunction with a gynecologic oncologist.

INTRODUCTION

Laparoscopy is often considered preferable to open procedures by patients and surgeons alike. It is associated with a decrease in cost, recovery time, pain, and postoperative complications [1]. One practice that is often used to aid laparoscopic procedures is morcellation, a method of cutting up larger pieces of tissue in order to be removed through smaller incisions. In recent years, electro-mechanical morcellation has become a point of controversy, due to the risk of dissemination of malignant tissue. This prompted the FDA to release new guidelines and contraindications for the procedure in 2014, heavily restricting its use in gynecological surgery [2]. These concerns have led to a decrease in laparoscopic surgeries overall, despite the clear benefits to the minimally invasive route [3]. Here we describe a new technique of laparoscopically removing a 17-cm ovarian adenocarcinoma from a 47-year-old Caucasian female with the use of power morcellation within a containment bag in order to minimize the risk of tissue dissemination.

INITIAL PRESENTATION

A 47-year-old nulligravid, morbidly obese, Caucasian female had a history of a 6 cm left adnexal cystic mass that had been followed for greater than two years. During that time, there was no significant change in character of the mass and the patient’s CA-125 levels remained within normal limits for a pre-menopausal female.

The patient had an onset of severe lower pelvic pain following a vigorous workout and was inclined to call an ambulance. At the time of ambulance arrival, her pain had largely resolved, and therefore, she did not present for care at that time. She later arrived to the Emergency Department complaining of severe primarily lower abdominal and pelvic pain.  Transvaginal ultrasound and computed tomography scan revealed a large left-sided complex adnexal mass. Labs included a white blood cell count of 9.3, hemoglobin of 4.1, hematocrit of 41.2, and platelet count of 260. Follicle stimulating hormone and CA-125 levels remained pending at that time. Patient’s reported history and imaging studies led to an initial suspicion of ovarian torsion. Although unable to completely rule out the possibility of malignancy, it was reassuring that the mass had been followed and stable for greater than two years and CA-125 levels had remained within normal limits during that timeframe.

PROCEDURE

Patient was taken to the operating room for an emergency laparoscopy.  A weighted speculum was placed in the vagina and the cervix was grasped with a sharp tooth tenaculum in order to install a Valtchev manipulator in the cervix for uterine manipulation. A Veress needle was placed in the abdominal cavity through a small incision at the bottom of the umbilicus and found to be in good position with the saline needle drop test, saline needle withdrawal test, and saline needle injection test. The abdominal cavity was then insufflated to a pressure of 15 mmHg. Next, an 11-mm blunt laparoscopic trocar was placed in the abdominal cavity. Two laparoscopic trocar ports were placed, one midline, approximately 3 cm above the pubis symphysis and a second approximately 8 cm to the right of that position. Washings of the abdominal cavity were collected and sent to pathology for analysis.

Inside the abdominal cavity, findings were largely within normal limits with the exception of the right ovary. The right ovary had no sign of torsion, but was replaced by a 17-cm, large, smooth-appearing white mass. A LigaSure bipolar coagulation device was used to divide the right fallopian tube from its origin at the uterus, and the dissection was carried down along the outer edge of the fallopian tube across the infundibulopelvic ligament in order to disconnect the right ovary. A 15-mm EndoCatch bag was placed through the umbilical port. Using several wavy graspers, the mass was then scooped into the EndoCatch bag without rupture, and we were able to exteriorize the mouth of the bag prior to any rupture of the mass.  Therefore, I believe we mostly eliminated the possibility of spilling the contents into the abdominal cavity.  There was extensive morcellation of the mass as it was removed through the 15-mm umbilical port. The frozen section was sent to Pathology and was discovered to be consistent with an adenocarcinoma.

Gynecologic Oncology was then contacted to assist with the remainder of the staging procedure, which was performed laparoscopically. This included total laparoscopic hysterectomy, bilateral pelvic and periaortic lymph node dissection, omentectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy.

On follow-up with the patient 21 months after the procedure, there has been no recurrence of the malignancy and no reported complications.

DISCUSSION

In recent years, the use of electro-mechanical morcellation in gynecological surgeries has become a point of controversy. The United States Food and Drug Administration released a safety communication in 2014 on the risks of dissemination of malignancies when using electro-mechanical morcellation. It includes two new contraindications against power morcellation for fibroid removal in peri-menopausal or post-menopausal women, or those who are candidates for en bloc tissue removal, as well as for any gynecological surgery involving tissue that is suspected to contain malignancy [2]. This new technique, as described above, effectively minimizes these risks by using blunt instruments to cautiously transfer a large mass into a containment bag for morcellation and removal, while avoiding rupture of the bag itself.

After this patient’s tumor was removed, the remainder of the staging procedure was also able to be completed laparoscopically, an outcome that can make a very large difference to cancer patients especially. A reduction in recovery time will allow patients to begin the next steps in their treatment, such radiation or chemotherapy, sooner than those who undergo open procedures.

This method opens up discussion on more widespread use of minimally invasive surgery. If further studies support its efficacy in preventing tissue dissemination, it has the potential to lead to an increase in candidates for laparoscopy, the removal of larger masses through smaller holes, and ultimately better outcomes for patients.

CONCLUSION

While this report covers only a single case, this method is step in the right direction for Gynecology as a whole and further studies are certainly necessary. The controversy surrounding the use of power morcellation in gynecological surgeries has led to a decrease in minimally invasive procedures which would otherwise be beneficial to patients [1,3]. This new technique of in-bag morcellation with the aid of blunt instruments has the potential to circumvent these risks, providing the ability to perform laparoscopies on large ovarian malignancies without spreading cancerous tissue.

MACSALES.COM INTRODUCES 2.0TB
AURA PRO SSD

Extends Life of MacBook Pro Retina with Aura Pro 2.0TB Internal Hard Drive Upgrade

One of the Fastest Internal SSDs Available

Woodstock, IL, June 26, 2017 – MacSales.com, a leading zero emissions Mac and PC technology company, announced today the availability of the new OWC 2.0TB Aura Pro Solid State Drive for mid-2012 to early 2013 Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display. One of the fastest internal SSDs available on the market today, the  2.0TB Aura Pro SSD is available with or without an Envoy Pro Kit, giving users the exact option they need.

Aura Pro SSD Also Available with Envoy Pro Enclosure

The Aura Pro 2.0TB SSD upgrade frees up and boosts capacity on the internal hard drive – at over five years of MacBook Pro ownership. The Aura Pro drive is also available as a kit with an Envoy Pro enclosure to immediately reuse an Apple internal hard drive, creating a new external USB 3.1 Gen1 portable drive.

Mac Users Love to Extend the Life of their Macs -- OWC Provides THE Upgrade Solution

Mac users love to extend the life of their Macs. A hard drive upgrade mid-life is a great way to create storage space for files, apps and software upgrades. Higher-capacity SSDs often bring faster transfer rates, so user data is readily accessible. Once again, OWC is providing Mac users with THE upgrade solution delivering performance, functionality and reliability. When originally introduced, the MacBook Pro with Retina display base model offered a 256GB SSD configuration without an upgrade option. Current base models start at 128GB to 256GB. The OWC Aura Pro gives users the freedom to upgrade capacity to meet their storage needs.

The Aura Pro SSD offers a wide range of industry-leading controller technologies for performance and reliability, including:

·                                                                                     Global wear leveling algorithm automatically distributes data evenly and manages program/erase count, maximizing SSD lifespan.

·                                                                                     StaticDataRefresh technology manages free space, gradually refreshing data across the SSD over time, enhancing data integrity.

·                                                                                     Hardware BCH ECC corrects errors up to 66-bit/1KB for superior data retention and drive health.

·                                                                                     Best-in-class power consumption.

·                                                                                     Advanced security protocols support AES 128/256-bit full-drive encryption.

Availability and Pricing:

The 2.0TB Aura Pro Solid State Drive and Envoy Pro storage solution are now available for same-day shipping. Pricing is:

·                                                                                     OWC 2.0TB Aura Pro Solid State Drive – OWCSSDAP12R02S  $899.99

·                                                                                     OWC 2.0TB Aura Pro Solid State Drive and Envoy Pro Kit – OWCSSDAP12K02S  $939.99

The 2.0TB Aura Pro comes with the OWC 5-Year SSD Limited Warranty.

As with many OWC upgrades, there is a free ‘how-to’ video available to assist in making upgrades as easy and affordable as possible.

Beyond new fibers and yarns, some innovators are looking to embed textiles with sensors to create “smart fabric.” Keith McMillen, who heads BeBop Sensors in California, explains that his firm does this by chemically treating fabric with conductive polymer coatings.

When a user stretches or puts pressure on the fabric sensors, current flow is affected, McMillen says. Printed electronic traces bring signals from the sensors to a computer chip that can measure a runner’s gait, monitor a wearer’s heart rate, or sense a person’s body temperature.

BeBop recently introduced a control glove for virtual-reality enthusiasts. Equipped with haptic sensors, the glove allows users to “feel” objects virtually when playing computer games. Also on the drawing board are car seat sensors linked to airbag deployment systems to better protect occupants in case of a crash, McMillen says.

SMART Alec Photo - in office

Mill Valley, CA, June 14, 2017 OWC, a leading zero emissions Mac and PC technology company, announced today SMART Alec https://www.smartalec.biz/, an essential Mac utility that constantly monitors and checks your Mac hard drives, SSDs, Firewire disks, and USB drives, warning you in advance if drives are failing or about to fail, so you’ll have plenty of time to back up and replace a bad drive. SMART Alec can help you avoid losing years of sensitive, irreplaceable data from databases, word processing, Excel, PowerPoint and other business files, precious photos and videos, music compositions, and more. SMART Alec is currently available in beta at: smartalec.biz/beta_test. The free final version of SMART Alec and $9.99 upgrade with additional features will be available in July.

A check engine light for your disks,” Smart Alec’s Advanced Warning System employs Disk Data Analysis and Predictive Failure Analysis, quietly working in the background to alert you if your drives currently have, or are developing  problems -- before it’s too late and you experience catastrophic disk failure. SMART AlecTM is available in July as a free download from the iTunes App Store, with a $9.99 paid upgrade with additional features, including USB/Firewire disk monitoring, email alerts, and more.

Drives Frequently Fail -- Why Wait Until a Disk Drive Fails to Take Action?

Although users expect hard drives to last forever, drives can frequently fail for numerous reasons, including overheating, power failures, surges from lightning strikes, water damage, and more. Once a drive fails, it can be virtually impossible or cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to reconstruct sensitive data through a computer technician or data recovery forensics company. Daily back-ups to a secondary drive are also risky, since unknowingly you may be backing up data from an already corrupted drive or to another drive with problems. Instead of waiting for the drive to fail or just hoping it won’t happen, users rely on SMART Alec’s continual background disk monitoring to protect sensitive data --Why wait until a disk drive fails to take action?

SMART Alec Free Version - Basic Features:

PREDICTED-TO-FAIL DISK: If your disk is likely to fail in the near future, you’ll get a “predicted to fail” warning.

FAILING DISK: If your disk is already failing, SMART Alec will tell you right away, giving you time to replace your disk and save your crucial data.

TEST YOUR DISK: SMART Alec will display a green bar by all disks that are healthy. Still worried? Get SMART Alec to re-test disks at any time.

KNOW YOUR DISK: All the information about your disk is readily available with a disk log to track your disk’s history.

SMART Alec $9.99 Upgrade - Additional Features:

• “SMART Over USB”: the free version is for SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drives only, not USB/FireWire drives. The upgrade adds failure prediction for most USB or FireWire connected drives, including most USB 3 devices.

Email Notifications: in addition to desktop alerts, notifications are also emailed to you about failing or predicted-to-fail disks in case you are away from your disks.

·    Blink Disk Light: a light blinks on the actual disk corresponding to the disk tile you have selected in the Smart Alec application.

SMART Alec Screen Shot - Drive Predicted to Fail

Available through iTunes App Store

The free SMART Alec essential drive utility and $9.99 SMART Alec upgrade with USB/FireWire disk monitoring and other additional features will ship July 2017, with the free version available through the iTunes App store. A Windows version is in development. For more information, see https://www.smartalec.biz/ or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SMARTAlec.biz/.

Free Beta Version Available Now

SMART Alec is currently in its final beta testing stage. To sign up as a beta tester, go to smartalec.biz/beta_test. In future releases of SMART Alec, users will be able to opt-in to share data about disk reliability and performance with SMART Alec’s self-learning disk failure prediction system, an algorithm which will analyze disk data from users to more accurately predict likely disk failure. Once opted in, users will get access to the most up-to-date statistics about the safest—and least safe—disks available and the reliability of the disks they are using. The latest beta, SMART Alec 1.0 b26, offers support for OS X 10.9 (Mavericks).

BEBOP SENSORS ANNOUNCES MARCEL MODULAR DATA GLOVE SOLUTIONS FOR VIRTUAL REALITY OEMS

Launches Low Cost Full-Featured Data Gloves with Haptic Feedback for VR/AR Applications
Senses Knuckle & Abduction Motions of the Human Hand in 5, 10, & 14 Sensor Versions
Video at: https://youtu.be/fM1UTwnIn6Q

Berkeley, CA, June 6, 2017 — BeBop Sensors, Inc. www.bebopsensors.com, the leader in smart fabric sensor technology, announced today BeBop Sensors designed Marcel Modular Data Gloves for OEMS in the Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality markets. Designed for accurate control and navigation in VR/AR environments, the BeBop Data Gloves are available to OEMs in 5, 10, and 14 sensor versions. The data gloves provide haptic feedback and sense knuckle and abduction motion of the human hand.

Data Gloves for Real-Time Control of Games & Environments

BeBop’s basic configuration provides high speed sensor processing as well as a 6 or 9 DoF (Degrees of Freedom) IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) which measures acceleration and angular rate. Fast, deterministic sensing provides sub-frame latency at 120 Hz for real-time control of games and environments. Designed by award-winning musical instrument creator and BeBop Sensors CEO, Keith McMillen, McMillen said: “All controllers need to be accurate and fast. If latency is more than 6-8 milliseconds, you are out of the band.”

Tactile & Audio Haptics Communicate a More Realistic Touch Experience

Mezzanine boards can be added to the printed circuit board assembly stack to add functionality, such as translation and haptic electronics. Haptics built into the fingertips provide a four octave range for complex stimuli that can convey surface quality and object contact. These non-resonant haptic actuators help close the loop of interaction between humans and virtual devices with contact and continuous surface sounds that drive the actuators, communicating a more realistic touch experience. A haptic audio creation kit is available, enabling content creators to customize and add to the haptic library.

Using BeBop’s patented fabric sensor technology, BeBop Sensors’ Marcel Modular Data Gloves are an affordable and robust solution for VR/AR and gaming environments. Key features include:

·        Modular: Marcel is a modular data glove solution.

·        Accurate & Fast: 120 Hz sub-frame latency for real-time interaction.

·        Haptic Technology: contact and continuous surface audio drives haptic actuators.

BeBop Sensors-designed Marcel Modular Data Gloves are available exclusively for OEMs. For more information, contact BeBop Sensors at contact@bebopsensors.com, website: http://www.bebopsensors.com

SoftRAID’s software RAID system is ideal for everyone who needs to safely store and backup massive amounts of data, including photographers, videographers, editors, audio producers, database and media managers, advertisers, archivers, and more. SoftRAID’s Easy Setup guides less technical users through the process of creating SoftRAID volumes, automating the process of configuring disks and making recommendations to help users setup their SoftRAID system. All users have to do is decide what the RAID volume will be used for and how much space to use (with hints from the application) -- SoftRAID Easy Setup does the rest.

Additional new features in SoftRAID include the ability to monitor USB and FireWire disks for failure and impending failure and translation to Simplified Chinese (for both the application and documentation), in addition to the 5 other languages SoftRAID already supports: English, French, German, Spanish and Japanese. SoftRAID is available to purchase from www.SoftRAID.com/store  for SoftRAID lite at $49 and the full SoftRAID at $179.  A 30 day fully functional Free Trial of SoftRAID or SoftRAID Lite is available to download immediately from www.SoftRAID.com/freetrial.

New Accessory Makes the MacBook Pro Actually Suitable For Pros

Christina Warren
1/04/17 7:40pm

One of the biggest professional gripes about the new MacBook Pro—dongle issues aside—is its lack of upgradability. Apple made the decision to solder the storage onto the logic board (just as it does with RAM), making it impossible for users to upgrade past the capacity they choose at the time of purchase.

Fortunately, longtime Mac accessory and storage maker OWC has a solution. Dubbed the OWC DEC, the device adds additional storage and ports to your MacBook Pro. Unlike other docks, this one actually is a dock. The MacBook Pro will sit on top of machine-milled aluminum that houses the NAND flash storage and additional ports.

Although most people will probably use the DEC on their desk, it’s fully portable. The DEC will make the new MacBook Pro about the same thickness as the old 2012 MacBook Pro with an optical drive. It also adds some weight, but OWC says it should still weigh three to four ounces lighter than the 2012 optical drive MacBook Pro.

I had a look at an early (but working) prototype model without ports and was impressed. Yes, this adds thickness and weight, but it also makes the MacBook Pro an actual pro machine.

In addition to up to 4TB of additional storage, the DEC will also include:

SD card slot
3 USB 3 Type A Ports
Gigabit Ethernet
OWC told me they are also looking at offering mini-DisplayPort in certain configurations and may even look at adding an additional battery.

Although you can’t upgrade the RAM (something no Apple laptop has allowed since 2012), this is probably the closest solution you’ll get to returning your Touch Bar MacBook Pro to what Apple used to offer back in the day.

The downside to all of this is price. OWC isn’t announcing pricing—and the volatile nature of NAND memory chips made it difficult for them to give me an estimate—but expect it to be expensive. I was told that the 4TB model would cost less than what Apple charges to go from 256GB to 2TB on the MacBook Pro. Apple charges $1400 for that privilege, so prepare to spend serious money.

I can’t fault OWC for its pricing structure though, this is a problem Apple brought upon itself when it decided to continue its evolution of turning professional tools into turnkey appliances. If you want a seamless way to upgrade the storage on your MacBook Pro and you want legacy ports, this is one of your few options.

New smart home controller Welle turns gestures into IoT commands
By Clayton Moore — March 31, 2017 5:43 PM

Why it matters to you

Some experts in the IoT market claim voice recognition is the future, but gesture recognition technology is making its own inroads in the smart home space.

There’s a new entrant in the race to control your smart home devices. A Chinese company called Maxustech has made a pretty good impression in the Kickstarter world with the Welle — a new smart home controller that uses sonar to recognize gestures as commands. It feels a bit like using the Force to turn your stuff on and off, which is pretty cool by itself.

The developers claim the Welle is the first device of its kind to use embedded sonar to detect human motion for the control of smart devices and apps. It’s the same kind of tech that is used for high-level sensing in drones and currently being tested for self-driving cars by a variety of tech giants. Because it’s meant to be a universal controller, the Welle can be used to control a wide variety of devices including lights, televisions, speakers, door locks, thermostats, fans, and more.

More: Researchers add gesture recognition to nearly everything

The early bird price on Kickstarter gets you one Welle for $69, and Maxustech has raised over $30,000 based on a $20,000 goal. The product will be in beta testing by May 2017 with production beginning in September. Maxustech expects to start shipping in October 2017.

In contrast to hands-free devices like the Echo and Google Home, Welle uses hand signals rather than voice commands to control smart home devices. It works by emitting low-level ultrasonic waves and collecting echoes that bounce back within its sensing areas. Then the device translates those echoes via software algorithms into commands for IoT devices, software applications, or other controllers. Because the device is designed to utilize the latest Bluetooth technology in concert with the latest sonar tech, it also consumes very little power.

The Welle will detect gestures out to about a meter, and recognizes at least a dozen simple gestures. In a nifty programming trick, the Welle developers integrated a function where a letter of the alphabet can be assigned to a unique device. In other words, just dash out an “X” in the air, and you can fire up the dishwasher or turn on certain lights. The developers are also using an open application program interface to encourage software and hardware to redefine gestures and invent new functionalities.

“Our goal was to create convenient control for people that could be used anywhere,” says CEO & Founder Mark Zeng. “Our team creates technology that adds pleasure to life by amplifying natural human ability. The feedback has been amazing.”

The development of the Welle could also be the cusp of a new age in IoT control. A recent study by Juniper Research forecasts that by 2020 there could be more than 400 million motion- and gesture-tracking devices. The technology could also have a fundamental connection to rising technologies like virtual reality.

Welle Welle - PowerPoint at work - on wall Welle - cooking

March 28, 2017, Shenzhen, China – Welcome to the modern world of controlling devices. Welle (pronounced vell-uh) is a smart device that instantly turns any surface into a “smart” interface using Sonar Technology through hand gestures. Welle http://getwelle.com/ gives you the ability to use unlimited simple gestures to control your favorite Internet of Things (IoT) devices, appliances, and apps – so powerful it even tracks your finger movements and recognizes handwriting. With Welle, the entire surface becomes connected to Sonar, allowing you to use hand gestures to control all your smart devices, such as lights, TVs, speakers, doors, thermostats, cameras, curtain/blinds, fans; and even PowerPoint presentations, apps, and IFTTT (If this, then that) conditional task applets, and more. Welle is launching today on Kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1781885077/1423513448?token=74255447

Uses Most Advanced Sonar-based Gesture Control to Connect to All Kinds of IoT Devices & Appliances – Mounts on Wall

Welle works in the home, office, or anywhere with a Bluetooth connection. Simply place the tiny Welle on any convenient surface or location, or mount Welle on a wall with the included 3M stickers. Working as a universal remote for all kinds of IoT devices and appliances, Welle uses the most advanced Sonar-based gesture control, replacing the multiple traditional household remote controls for a convenient and enjoyable connected home and office experience. Welle recognizes standardized gestures and also lets you assign your own gestures or handwriting short-cuts to interact with devices everywhere in your life.

Creates Custom Gestures, Tracking, & Even Recognizes Handwriting

Welle means “wave” in German and Welle’s logo shows two fingers tracking human gestures with ultrasonic waves. Welle uses Sonar Technology, advanced ultrasonic signals used in the military, automotive and drone markets, that can accurately track human movements. Welle’s Sonar Technology transmits signal pulses and collects the reflected energy back from targets, identifying motions, gestures, and finger movements from the echoed signals. These echoes are translated into different instructions and words to IoT devices using an advanced hardware design and software algorithms. The Welle Sonar Technology tracks your fingers when you touch a surface and can even recognize handwriting motions, transforming them into customized actions. Conventional gesture detectors, such as those used in smartphones, only provide single gesture readings. In contrast, Welle provides rich information, such as trajectory data and digitized gestures, enabling a wide variety of control functions for everyday convenience.

Welle Controls Any Device, Anywhere Instantly:

·        Thermostats

·        Coffee makers

·        Lights

·        Windows shades/curtains

·        TVs

·        Doors

·        Speakers

·        Locks

“Human hands are one of nature’s most perfect creations. They are highly sensitive and can manipulate objects with fine dexterity. The iPhone ushered in the era of touch control, but its under-glass technology diminishes the hand’s tactile feel, limiting the ability to control devices with a high degree of sensitivity,” said Mark Zeng, CEO, Welle. “Welle overcomes this obstacle by creating convenient controls for people at home and at work. The feedback has been amazing. People first say ‘Wow!’ and then they ask how they can get a Welle for themselves and their friends. We love that!”

Open API Now Available for Software & Hardware Developers

Welle provides an open API (Application Programming Interface) for software and hardware developers to redefine gestures, creating infinite possibilities for controlling devices and apps. Welle features a well-designed API, readable documents, example codes, and a developer community with full support. For moreinformation on the Welle API, see: http://www.maxustech.com or email: support@maxustech.com.

 "50 Sensational Female Guitarists"
The Great Kat
A belligerent self-promoter with zero patience for crap guitar technique, The Great Kat’s September 2005 GP interview, quite frankly, scared the holy heck out of lots of our readers. But this Juilliard-trained violinist’s turbocharged, speed-metal readings of classical pieces were pretty astounding when she first appeared in the late 1980s. They’re still impressive, in fact, and Kat (born Katherine Thomas) may be one of the fastest guitarists of all time. If only she’d quit screaming at us. —MM
