It’s Hell Getting Old! The Road to Wellness—Almost

A Year in the Medical System with 14 Different Doctors – A Unique Story of Hope

Rochester, NY, November 8, 2010 -- A new book focusing on a personal view of the health-care system, It’s Hell Getting Old! The Road to Wellness—Almost, is written by author John Larish, a well-known writer, broadcaster, speaker, and inventor.  In 2009, Larish spent a hellish year going through treatments for spinal pain with 14 different doctors.  Larish was not walking well, and x-rays indicated spinal stenosis, with the potential of his not being able to walk at all.  Doctors first tried spinal injections, and then turned to spinal surgery to try to give him a chance for a normal life. There were many limitations after surgery, but things were moving along well, until what appeared to be a disconnection of nerves in his right leg.

“The whole process was like climbing a high mountain and then falling to the bottom of the valley below the mountain. There were lessons learned, not just for the stenosis problem, but for other medical challenges that occurred, including the potential of multiple myeloma being the major cause of my problems, which fortunately was not,” said author John Larish.

Surgery, rehabilitation, along with the peaks and valleys of health and life, create a story of unique hope. Woven into the story is comments from Dr. Bradford Berk, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), who went through a challenging spinal injury experience in an accident and came back from it with a greater understanding of the needs of his patients.
