Smart Medical Wearables Are Poised to Dramatically Improve Quality of Life

The future is bright for medical wearable technology, and Medical Wearables 2019 conference and expo will identify emerging technologies and application trends, and provide opportunities to exchange ideas, form new companies, and network with industry peers. Topics to be delved into include next-generation medical wearable technologies, wearable sensors, emerging applications, trends and challenges, roadmaps, R&D, M&A, competitive forces, market drivers and disruptive technologies. Key speakers include executives from Kaiser Permanente, National Cancer Institute, Qualcomm, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), and Strategy Analytics.

“Medical wearables are the next big thing. History will show that FitBit and Apple Watch are just early primitive devices, and that the next wave of smart medical wearables will revolutionize healthcare and dramatically improve quality of life,” said Mike Pinelis, Ph.D., President and CEO, Microtech Ventures and MEMS Journal, show organizers for Medical Wearables 2019.

Topic: Medical Wearables and Machine Learning - Emerging Trends and Clinical Applications

Medical wearable technology has been growing fast for the past ten years. It can now measure, track, store, and analyze “medical grade” physiologic data and has the potential to be used in clinical settings. This talk will discuss the “Three Use Rules” and their applicability in bridging the gap between technology and clinical practice. Machine learning and AI are transforming many industries, and healthcare has perhaps the greatest potential to benefit. Christopher Hartshorn, PhD, Program Director, National Cancer Institute NIH - Logo

Christopher Hartshorn, PhD, Program Director, National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Topic: Medical Wearables for Remote Patient Monitoring Applications

Cancer patients disconnected from resources at intensive cancer centers face challenges beyond the disease. These patient populations include both ones in rural communities, as well as populations who have access hindered via disability, transportation, or time. This “last mile” problem of healthcare delivery is becoming more tractable than before with modern broadband connectivity and sensors. The talk will discuss the major barriers from the patient and clinical workflow/integration perspectives, as well as synergistic efforts across NCI divisions and other agencies attempting to enable these tools for clinical decision support. Sandra Nagale, PhD, Sr. Manager, Digital Health, Boston Scientific - Logo

Sandra Nagale, PhD, Sr. Manager, Digital Health, Boston Scientific

Topic: Wearable Technologies, Sensors, and Data Analytics for Chronic Disease Applications

The use of wearable technologies for medical purposes has steadily increased in recent years. However, wider adoption is still slow. Promising areas to improve include enhancements to the core technologies and sensors. This talk will include an overview of the current market and emerging opportunities, examples of using wearable devices, sensors, and data analytics in a proof-of-concept clinical study, along with life-saving diagnostic algorithms for chronic disease applications. Nagale will discuss digital technologies and the development of a high sensitivity predictive algorithm for heart failure events.  Full abstract: http://www.medwearablesconference.com/speakers.html#sandra_nagale.

Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Technology Association - Logo

Topic: How Technology Innovation in Healthcare Will Drive Down Costs

Technology presents an opportunity to dramatically improve our quality of life and slash healthcare costs that plague our nation. However, our healthcare system does not embrace technology as an alternative to drugs yet. The data from wearable sensors and monitors can promote wellness and cut down on costly doctor visits. Doctors, patients and regulators have a role to play in bringing down healthcare costs. With the right policies in place and wider adoption of innovative technologies, our country can go a long way toward promoting preventive care and easing the burden on our healthcare system. Topic: Medical Wearables and 5G - Enabling the Transformation of Healthcare Delivery

5G promises to revolutionize healthcare through significant advances in data speed, capacity, and reliability. Through its ability to handle high volumes of real-time data, patients can be monitored at home as easily as in a clinic or hospital. Doctors will have access to up-to-the-second patient data at their fingertips, regardless of their relative locations. This talk will cover some of the many ways 5G will enable new capabilities for medical wearables and transform the delivery of healthcare. Topic: Medical Wearables for Improved Outcomes in Diabetes

According to a recent International Diabetes Federation report, the world diabetic population is poised to grow from 425 million to 629 million by 2045. Despite therapeutic advances, as well as huge expenditures, we have not been able to control this epidemic. We need more effective monitoring solutions to guide diabetics and their caregivers regarding diet, exercise, and medications, without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This talk will focus on recent advances in CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitoring) wearable solutions and their integration with insulin pump technology for improving clinical outcomes in diabetes, with an overview of recent advances in the CGM field, including Bluetooth capabilities, predictive analytics, and future trends. Cliff Raskind Senior Director Smart Devices and IoT Strategy Analytics - Logo

Cliff Raskind, Senior Director, Smart Devices and IoT, Strategy Analytics

Topic: Consumer Wearables - Recent Trends and Gradual Evolution into Healthcare Applications

Raskind will examine the trajectory of consumer wearables and how they will become increasingly useful for healthcare applications over the next decade. He will also discuss predictions on product roadmaps and how access to capital for medical grade (e.g. FDA regulated) and consumer grade (e.g. Fitbit) types of devices will increasingly converge.
